The Antalya of Today

The high mountains on one side, the winding streets, the motley-styled buildings, the tall trees, the vastly stretching sea with its inviting warm water under a blinding sun and the sound of the horse-shoes of the horse-drawn carriages, provide such a spectacular and enchanting view in the Antalya of today that one feels refreshed spiritually in all those serenity.

Of couse we should admit that the inhabitants of Antalya have done their best to add something to what the nature here has bestowed them. They have constructed confortable but cheap hotels, motels and restaurands in the City and alng the coastline for the vacationers, and the keepers offer an almost incredible array of services and hospitality.

The History Of Antalya

Through the excavations carried out in the Antalya district in the last quarter of the present Century, a stuning discovery of the prehistoric ages of Paleolithic, Neolithic and Mezolithic has proved the miracle of an early civilization ruled in the caves of 'Karain' and 'Beldibi'.

Following the Hittite dissolution some Akkadians migrated to this area after the great Trojan War according to the historical records. Begining from the 8th Century B.C. The age of colonizing started . Side and Phaselis were the first two colonical cities built in Pamphylia. Herodot, the historian, reports that Pamphylia was conquered by the King of Lydia, Croesus Then it was in the hand of the Persians in the 6th Century B.C... Later on, Alexander the Great captured this area in the year 334 B.C. but Perge, Aspendos and Side were not destroyed or plundered by him. After the death of Alexander the Great the City was under the rule of Ptolemaios from Egypt, and further it was a dependency of Pergamum by the decree of the Roman Senate in the 2nd Century B.C.. Soon after this the King of Pergamum. Attalos II  had the City of Antalya constructed and the City was called as Attalos after him, later on it turned to be named as 'Attaleia' and in the end as Antalya.'Hidirlik-Tower' in the City-Park, the fortesses of the eastern gate and hadrianus Gate, which all were erected in that era, still stand there . Pamphylia was bound to Cilicia in the First Centruy B.C.. It was mastered by the roman Empire in the 2nd Century A.D.. Christianity started to be diffused in this district in the 4th Century A.D. it was under the rule of Byzantium in the 7th Century A.D.. Soon after this it was pillaged by the Arabians, then plundered by the Rodhorian, the Venetian and the Genevese pirates, and the Crusaders followed them successively. The Sultan of the Seljuk Turks. Giyasettin Keyhusrev I, got Pamphylia under the rule of the Seljuks at the begining of the 13th Century A.D. Soon after this Antalya lived its jubilant days and expanded in this period and also became a city for winter-hibernation of the Sultans.

Somewhat later it was a possession of Hamitogullari and Tekeliogullari Dynasties. Then it was overrun by the Ottoman Empire in 1391.

6/3/2008 - Geographical Position Of Antalya !

Kategori: Antalya

Geographical Position Of Antalya

It covers an area of 20.591 square kilometres, about 2.6 % of the total Turkish land. Two land projections in the east and west from two plateaus called "Tasel" and "Teke" as well as the bay of Antalya, Most of the area is mountainous. The land around fit for farming and for agriculture is 78 % of the total area. As the coast in the west of Antalya is steep and rocky, the shore is ofthen deep whereas in the east the slopes of the Taurus Mountains come  down the shore in a slight angle, so that the soil between the shore and the hillsides is usually fruitful and the sea is shallow forming the fine sandy beaches of the Turkish Riviera.

There are many rushing streams, meandreing rivers, some of which are almost dry in summer. Most important ones are: Manavgat, Kopru-cay, Aksu, Duden, Dim, Kargi, Alakir, Karpuz, Basgoz and Karaman. As mentioned before, the waterfalls are widely known. Small lakes near the " Bey Montains" are usually dry in summer and the important one is karagol (Black Lake)

  • The tourism sector in the region of Antalya had small beginnings in the 1960s.
  • The development of tourism soon gained momentum however due to the wide variety of touristic attractions which the region had to offer.
  • Tourism in the area was confined mainly to the domestic market., but it was in the mid 1980s that the fledgling international tourism sector started to take off.
  • Domestic tourism has also become a major player in the tourism game with locals concentrating on their ‘holiday homes’ and spending their vacations in ‘state holiday camps’.
  • An important feature of regional tourism is the provision of sufficient hotels which are purpose-built and of high enough standard to keep ahead of foreign competition
  • Antalya has huge touristic potential with its warm climate, diverse historical and cultural background and great natural beauty.
